Entry Requirements

You can choose from a wide range of A Level and equivalent courses.

It is important to point out that the courses we offer are in some cases very different from the same subject at GCSE. You will need to look at the subject content information provided by the departments at the Sixth Form Courses Evening, or on the website, very carefully to check that the course is what you expect.

SUBJECT SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

Applied Business Level 3 (single) 

Students must achieve at least a grade 4 in GCSE Business Studies and grade 4 in either English language or literature. 

 Art & Design: Fine Art 

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 in art and design. Students must also have at least a grade 5 in English language or literature. 

Biology 

Students must achieve at least grades 6 6 in double award science, a grade 6 in Maths and grade 5 in English language or literature. Students studying chemistry, biology and physics as separate sciences must achieve a minimum of a grade 6 in biology and one other sciencegrade 6 in Maths and grade 5 in English language or literature.  

BTEC ICT Level 3 (single or double award) 

Students must achieve a minimum of a Merit in ICT at GCSE level and at least a grade 4 in English language or literature.  

Business 

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 in GCSE business and at least a grade 5 in English language or literature and a minimum of grade 5 in maths 

Chemistry 

Students must achieve at least grades 6 6 in double award science and a grade 6 in maths. Students studying chemistry, biology and physics as separate sciences must achieve a minimum of a grade 6 in chemistry and one other science and grade 6 in maths.  

Computer Science  

Students must achieve a grade 6 in computer science at GCSE, two grade 6 qualifications in science and a grade 7 in maths. 

Design Engineering 

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 from higher tier maths and ideally grades 5 5 in double award science. A grade 5 in design technology or engineering would also be desirable. 

Drama & Theatre Studies 

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 in Drama if studied at GCSE and at least a grade 5 in GCSE English language or literature. 

Economics  

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 in maths and English language or literature. 

English Language 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 6 in English language and English literature. 

English Literature 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 6 in English language and English literature. 

English Language & Literature 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 5 in English language and English literature, but in either combination. 

Environmental Science 

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 6 in science and a grade 5 in higher tier maths. 

Food Science & Nutrition Level 3 (single) 

Students with GCSE Food must achieve at least grade 5 and a grade 4 in English language or literature and grades 4 4 in double award science. Those without GCSE Food must achieve at least a grade 4 in English language or literature and grades 4 5 in double award science.  

French 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 in French. 

Further Mathematics 

Students must achieve at least grade 8 in maths. 

Geography  

Students must achieve at least a grade 5 in geography and a grade 5 in English language or literature. 

German 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 in German. 

Health & Social Care Level 3 (single or double award) 

If students have studied Health and Social Care Level 2, then they must have achieved a Merit, and students must achieve grade 4 in both English language and English literature and a grade 4 4 in double award science. 

If students have not studied Health and Social Care level 2, then students must achieve grade 4 in both English language and English literature and a grade 4 5 in double award science. 

History 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 in history. If students have not studied history at GCSE then they must achieve at least grade 6 in English language or literature. 

Mathematics 

Students must achieve at least a grade 7 in maths. 

Media Studies 

Students must achieve grades 5/in English language and English literature. In the case of 5/4 in English, a grade 6 or higher in art will be taken into consideration. 

Music 

Students who take GCSE Music must achieve a minimum of a grade 5 but should also be able to sing or play a musical instrument to at least grade 5 ABRSM/LCM/Trinity or Rockschool standard. Students who don't take GCSE Music may still be able to take A Level Music provided they have achieved grade 5 in Music Theory and are performing at grade 6 standard or beyond. We strongly recommend that students take lessons on their chosen instrument 

Philosophy and Ethics 

Students who have studied GCSE RE/philosophy must achieve grade 6. Those who have not studied GCSE RE/philosophy must achieve 66 in English and literature. 

Physical Education 

If students have taken PE at GCSE, they must have achieved at least a grade 5. Students must achieve at least grade 4 5 in double award science, and grade 4 and 5 in either combination in English language and English literature. For A level PE, students must be participating to at least a high club standard and be training/competing on a regular basis. 

Physics 

Students must achieve at least grades 6 6 in double award science and a grade 6 in maths. Students studying chemistry, biology and physics as separate sciences must achieve at least a grade 6 in physics and one other science and grade 6 in maths. 

Psychology 

Students must achieve at least grades 5 5 in double award science and grade 5 in either English language or literature and maths.

Spanish 

Students must achieve at least a grade 6 in Spanish. 

Sport Studies Level 3 (single or double award) 

If students have studied either GCSE PE or Sports Studies then a grade 4 or level 2 Merit is needed, and students must achieve grade 4 in both English language and English literature and a grade 4 4 in double award science. 

If students have not studied GCSE PE or Sports Studiesthen they must achieve grade 4 in both English language and English literature and a grade 4 5 in double award science.  

Textiles 

Students must achieve grade 5 in art or textiles and grade 5 in English or literature.
